dance class

Rules, instructions and advice

  • Please use shoes for indoor use, like dancing slippers, sneakers or you can even dance barefoot. We will not bear responsibility for anyone slipping because they danced with only socks on their feet.
  • Don’t walk with outdoor footwear on the dance floor.
  • Dress casually and comfortably for the lessons. Bring along a drinking bottle and a small towel, as we usually move quite a bit – and sweat. If you forgot your drinking bottle, we offer water and drinking glasses.
  • If youspill liquid from your glass or bottle by mistake, please wipe it up immediately so that no one will slip.
  • Please do your best to arrive before the lesson starts. It will take a few moments to pay and to change your shoes and clothes.
  • Avoid scents and perfumes during lessons! Sweating brings out odours very strongly. If your partner happens to be sensitive to odours he/she may have an awkward time, and allergic and asthmatic persons may even get severe symptoms. Thank you for showing consideration.

For new dancers

  • Our dancing school is open all year round, and there are no semesters. We will let you know about cancelled lessons, recesses for holidays etc. in our homepage (News) and in our newsletters – sign up for getting them by sending an e-mail to bailamas72@gmail.com
  • We repeat the basic steps and moves as needed at the beginning of every basic lesson – so feel free to join in any time.
  • You can come without a partner. We change dancing partners every few minutes – this guarantees that everyone will get to dance. Changing partners will also help you learn much faster – and on your turn you will also get to dance with the teachers and the assistants!) Mostly our groups have even couples or even couples + one waiting for the change due to the fact that both the teachers and the assistants can dance both as leaders and followers. During your free turn it is worth to 1) watch and study and 2) dance along with the basic steps if you don’t yet feel apt to trying the sequence on your own.
  • The change of partners will take place clockwise. If the teacher is dancing as a leader the followers will change and if the teacher is dancing as a follower the leaders will change clockwise. As changing partners is a very efficient method of learning we warmly recommend it. In this way you will also meet new people who are interested in dancing – later it will be easier to connect with them when you meet in dancing places.

If you wish, you can of course dance                   only with your own partner.

The dances

Salsa

Salsa is the most popular Latin dance in the world. It comes in numerous versions and most of them can be danced either solo or with a partner. In BailaMás we dance the Cuban salsa with circular motion, also called Casino. That is the salsa that people dance in the Cuban streets even today.

Here are some useful tips for Salseros-to-be: A Salsa – English Dictionary, advice about the dancing position and other basic technical details.

Rueda is couple salsa that is danced in a circle. There are different turns and the leader tells the dancers which one to do. He may also order them to change partners. This looks and is great fun!

Bachata

Bachata originates from the Dominican Republic. It is a romantic couple dance with soft movements that is often played between salsa songs in Latin parties. Bachata is a very intimate dance end the movements are more simple than in salsa.

Son

Son can be seen as the ”mother” of salsa. The movements are soft and a bit slower than in salsa, and there are not as many turns. On the other hand it is more demanding to stay in rhythm. Son, too, can be danced both alone and with a partner.

Reggaeton

is a popular form of Latin hip-hop that is danced in the streets and discotheques in Cuba. It includes a lot of movement of the hips, chest and shoulders. It will result in sweat and a joyous mood, and you will learn to master your body better.
